Match the song to the right radio station
| Song | Station |
|---|---|
| "Black Hole Sun" — Soundgarden | CIMX (88.3) |
| "Vaseline" — Stone Temple Pilots | WRIF (101.1) |
| "Shine On" — Collective Soul | WLLZ (98.7) |
| "Yellow Ledbetter" — Pearl Jam | WHYT (96.3) |
| "Spaceship" — Smashing Pumpkins | WZDT (102.7) |
That's right! All these songs, along with others by the same artists, can be heard on all of the above radio stations several times a day! Here in Detroit, in the aftermath of the "Alternative Music Revolution," I have begun to get very irritated with stations whose playlists are supposed to be devoted to one particular musical genre or another playing the same songs as all the other radio stations around.
I'd say "Down with Corporate Radio" but there's no real alternative to it. College Radio and Public Broadcasting are too into being too cool for everyone else most of the time (I'm vying for some advertisements to be placed for some of the good shows in this issue), so I say Up with Pirate Radio! Down with the FCC!
The FCC's only purpose, originally, was not to monitor content but frequency; to make sure that no one's signal was overlapping one another. So when did they become moral watchdogs? Fuck 'em. How about some good original free form music or purist stations devoted to one particular sound and all those sounds that revolve closely around them?
I'm really digging Digital Cable Radio – where else (other than a college station where some "politically aware" youth with an attitude thinks its hip to play it) can you hear the Dead Kennedys on the air during the day? The only thing missing for my money is an all Rockabilly Station that doesn't have to originate from somewhere in deep southern Ohio.
So, I guess for the time being, listen to College Radio and torture the Disc Jockeys who act so cool that it hurts (one symptom is a deep lethargic voice) by calling up and requesting the Revolting Cocks and study those manuals to find out how to build and operate your own transmitter.
