One of the most over-looked and under-promoted films of 1993 was Alex Winter & Tom Stern's brilliant and hysterical feature Freaked. Rumor has it that a change in the brass at Century Fox was the kiss of death, condemning it to a limited theatrical release and little fanfare when it was released on video last year.
Freaked (formerly known as Hideous Mutant Freaks) is the story of one-time child actor, and full-time jerk, Ricky Coogan, who makes a Faustian deal with the EES (Everything Except Shoes) corporation to promote a dangerous fertilizer, Zygrot 24, in the South American country of Santa Flan. He and his horn-dog buddy Ernie and perky environmentalist Julie come across a freak show and become part of the act under the evil Elijah C. Skuggs' handiwork.
And that's just the beginning! If you are familiar with Winter & Stern's other films like Squeal of Death then you might have an inkling as to what a treat Freaked is. The humor is extremely twisted and the jokes just don't stop coming.
This film's got everything! Music from the likes of the Butthole Surfers, cameos from Keanu Reeves and Morgan Fairchild, psychic trolls, down-trodden wrenches, thirteen milkmen, and Mr. T.
Freaked isn't just a lot of jokes strung together. It's got a great script, direction, and acting! I can't recommend this film enough. Track it down, rent it, buy it, learn it, love it, live it. This is the CdC pick of the month. And let me just say, that those that don't believe us will stand knee-deep in the blood of their children.
